Karlka Developments expands nationally with acquisition
The Nyiyaparli people of the east Pilbara region have today moved further towards their goal of long-term economic independence and social prosperity, with the acquisition of national Australian security fencing company, FenceWright.
Karlka Developments Pty Ltd is the commercial arm of the Karlka Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation, which represents the Nyiyaparli people of the East Pilbara and is 100% Aboriginal owned.
Karlka Developments Chair, Ms Natalie Parker said “The Nyiyaparli Traditional Owners are delighted to acquire ‘FenceWright’. It is considered a landmark announcement for our Traditional Owners as we move towards economic self-determination.”
The purchase of the Australian security fencing company is the first addition of Karlka Development’s planned acquisition agenda.
Karlka Developments CEO, Mr John Valuri said the company purchased FenceWright because the fit was right and it provided multiple benefits for the Nyiyaparli community.
“We want our entire community to take advantage of the opportunities FenceWright will deliver to the Nyiyaparli people.”
“These acquisitions allows our community to gain on-the-job experience in a range of skilled and unskilled roles. This is about actively creating the future we want. To be independent and creating our own employment opportunities,” he added.
Karlka Developments is considering business purchases in civil construction, retail and other related sectors.
“It’s our first acquisition and I expect there will be more to come. Ultimately we are looking to buy businesses that link with our vision, provides scalability and leverage with our other businesses, diversifies our income and delivers a range of employment opportunities,” Mr Valuri said.
“We are looking for businesses that help us focus on self-determination through training, employment, and capacity building. Not only for our people, but for the Indigenous business sector more broadly.”
“We are here to do business,” he added.
FenceWright State Manager, Mr Michael Davies said Karlka Developments will provide additional capital and support as it continues to expand into a truly national security fencing contractor.
FenceWright has successfully completed a wide range of security fencing projects including mine sites, power stations, roadside fencing and prisons. FenceWright is currently in the final stages of completing a bespoke, ‘one of a kind’ perimeter fencing at the New Perth Stadium – a project that Mr Davies said confirmed the company’s reputation as the ‘go to’ provider for complex security fencing projects.
“We are excited by the opportunities this provides our team in now being a 100% Aboriginal owned business. Our employees, management, suppliers and subcontractors remain the same, but the new opportunities now available to us are certainly exciting.
“It will only enhance our business,” Mr Davies said.
Karlka Developments is a member of Supply Nation, the national body that works with businesses to embed Indigenous organisations in their supply chain, creating supplier diversity and a strong Indigenous business sector.
The Nyiyaparli people are Traditional Owners of approximately 36,684 square kilometres of land and waters in the east Pilbara, including the township of Newman. Currently, the Nyiyaparli people have native title land use agreements with a number of mining companies.
